PMM 180. – Die Druckgeschichte der drei Teile der Erstausgabe des "Robinson" ist verworren und hat zu vielen Kontroversen geführt (grundlegend zur Bibliographie: Hutchins, Robinson Crusoe and its Printing, New York 1925). Alle drei Bände unseres Exemplars gehören zur e rsten Ausgabe. Die große Anzahl von Varianten im Text erklärt sich aus der Tatsache, daß die Druckvorgänge beim ersten und zweiten Teil sehr rasch aufeinander folgten und Exemplare aus Lagen mit unterschiedlichem Korrekturgrad zusammengestellt wurden. – Bd. I: mit den Varianten "apyly" im Vorwort und "Pilot" auf S. 343, Zeile 2; Bd. II: Blatt A 4 verso weiß (nach Hutchins "first issue"); Bd. III: S. 270 mit der (falschen) Kustode "The" (anstelle von "A" in den späteren Drucken). – Die Kupfer mit einer Darstellung von Robinson, einer Weltkarte in zwei Hemisphären (am Bug mit kleiner Ausdünnung) und einem Plan der Insel (mit professionell restaurierten, kaum noch sichtbaren Einrissen entlang der Faltungen). – Bd. I: S. 363/64 mit winziger Fehlstelle (minimaler Buchstabenverlust); Bd. II: Titel mit Besitzvermerk und angerändertem Eckabriß, S. 1/2 tls. gelöst, S. 177-180 unten mit Einriß; beide Bde. nur vereinzelt leicht fleckig; Bd. III: etw. fleckig sowie gleichmäßig leicht gebräunt.

Rare first edition. – 3 volumes with engraved frontispiz, folded copper plate and folded engraved map. – All 3 volumes in the first edition. – The printing history of the three parts of the first edition is confused and has led to much controversy. The large number of variants in the text can also be explained by the fact that the printing processes for the first and second parts followed each other very quickly and copies were compiled from quires with different degrees of correction. – Volume I: "apyly" in preface and "Pilot" on p. 343, line 2; volume II: sheet A 4 blank on the verso (Hutchins’ "first issue"); volume III: p. 270 with the wrong custode "The" instead of "A" in the later issues. – The engravings with a depiction of Robinson, a world map in 2 hemispheres (thinning in joint), and a map of the island (with professionally restored, barely visible tears along the folds). – Volume I: small damage on p. 363/64 (minimal loss of letter); volume II: title with ownership entry and remargined tear, p. 1/2 partly loosened, p. 177-180 with tear at the bottom; both volumes only sporadically slightly soiled; volume III: somewhat soiled and evenly tanned. – Modern calf in the style of the 18th century, with label and gilt-tooling on the spine (minimal scratches and scuffs), together in a mod. cloth cassette.
