Howgego E 10. – Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779-1859) trat 1796 in den Dienst der British East India Company. Er nahm 1803 an Arthur Wellesleys Mission nach dem Marathen-Land teil und wurde 1808 als Resident von Nagpur in politischer Mission zum Emir von Kabul gesandt. In Elphinstones Gefolge reiste ein Stab tüchtiger Offiziere. Leutnant John Macartney wurde mit den geographischen Arbeiten betraut. Die Erforschung von Klima, Boden und Produkten oblag Leutnant Irvine. – Vorsätze leicht leimschattig, papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, kaum fleckig. – Exemplar für Prinz Wilhelm von Preußen (1783-1851) mit seinem Monogramm "P. W. v. P." auf dem Rücken, Spiegel jeweils mit Exlibris "Des Prinzen Adalbert v. Preussen Bibliothek" sowie in Bd. I Titel und Serientitel verso mit Stempel der Großherzoglich Hessischen Hofbibliothek mit Ausscheidungsstempel.

First German edition. – 2 volumes. – Mountstuart Elphinstone entered the service of the British East India Company in 1796. He took part in Arthur Wellesley’s mission to the Marathe country in 1803 and was sent as resident of Nagpur on a political mission to the Emir of Kabul in 1808. In Elphinstone’s entourage travelled a staff of able officers, including Lieutenant John Macartney and Lieutenant Irvine. – End papers with slight glue stains, slightly tanned due to paper quality, barely soiled. – Copy for Prince William of Prussia, with his monogram on the spine, each pastedown with the bookplate of Prince Adalbert of Prussia, the title of volume I and the series title on the verso with the stamp of Grand Ducal Court Library of Hesse (with elimination stamp). – Contemporary half calf with gilt tooling and title on the spine, and four edge colouring (somewhat soiled, rubbed and bumped).
