Duveen 117. – Die seltene erste deutsche Ausgabe der beiden berühmtesten Schriften von Girolamo Cardano, "De subtilitate" und "De rerum varietate", letzteres hier vollständig, ersteres in Auszügen verdeutscht. Das Werk bildet eine Enzyklopädie der Naturwissenschaften mit Astronomie, Geographie (u. a. viel zu Amerika; vgl. Alden 559/6), Anthropologie, Magie und Technik. – Die Abbildungen zeigen u. a. eine chiromantische Hand, ein Astrolab, eine Schiffshebemaschine etc. Cardano erfand die nach ihm benannte freischwingende Kompaßaufhängung, auf welche die gleichnamige Antriebswelle zurückgeht. "A mine of facts, both real and imaginary; of notes on the state of the sciences; of superstition, technology, alchemy and various branches of the occult" (DSB III, 66). – Vorsätze erneuert, Titel angerändert und nur noch fragmentarisch erhalten, Bl. 2 und das letzte Bl. mit angeränderten Ausrissen (kein Textverlust), durchgehend, tls. stärker wasserrandig, gering gebräunt und fleckig.

The work forms an encyclopedia of natural sciences with astronomy, geography (lots on America; see Alden 559/6), anthropology, magic and technology. – End-papers renewed, title remargined and only present in fragment, sheet 2 and the last sheet with remargined tears (no loss of test), with partially heavier waterstains throughout, slightly tanned and soiled. – Damaged, contemporary calf over wooden boards with rich blind-tooling (missing clasps).
